Once upon a time there was a girl
who forgot to post a fairly important letter.
No one posts letters these days, she said,
how can I be expected to remember?
It stayed in her coat pocket for a week
until it was rumpled and she had to wonder
if the recipient would be disgusted
and if the post office would ever accept an item
in such poor condition. This terrible doubt
was too much to handle so
she put the letter under her bed
on the premise that everything else she had ignored
over the years either sorted itself out
or proved completely unimportant.
